The National Health Service (NHS) owns one of the single largest estates in England. This estate comprises buildings that date back to Victorian times and those that are considered the most modern facilities in the world.  Given its size and constant change, the NHS will own land that will no longer be required, nor likely to be needed for health service purposes, in the future.  This surplus land is a public asset and therefore should be used for the greatest benefit of the local population.

An initiative to accelerate the release of public sector land for development was announced on 8 June 2011 by the Minister of State for Housing and Local Government.

Read the Department’s strategy, published today, on how this initiative is going to be achieved
