At a round table event facilitated by the Department of Health in January 2011, patients' groups, health professionals, the NHS and industry were invited to develop a practical plan for collaborative action to minimise wastage of medicines and improve health outcomes.

Health Minister Lord Howe was the keynote speaker at the event, which was hosted by The King’s Fund.

The event followed publication of a Department of Health commissioned report, Evaluation of the Scale, Causes and Costs of Waste Medicines’ in November 2010.
