The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:
Bed Availability and Occupancy - Quarter ending 31st December 2011:
The KH03 is a Quarterly collection from all NHS organisations that operate beds, ordinary or daycase, both NHS Trusts and PCTs. It collects the total number of available bed days and the total number of occupied bed days by consultant main specialty. Main findings are:
• The average daily number of beds open overnight was 138,074 in Quarter 3 2011/12 compared with 138,714 in Quarter 2 2011/12.
• The average occupancy rate for all beds open overnight was 85.3% in Quarter 3 2011/12 compared with 83.9% in Quarter 2 2011/11.
• The average daily number of general and acute beds open overnight was 105,280 in Quarter 3 2011/12 compared with 105,673 in Quarter 2 2011/12.
• The average occupancy rate for general and acute beds open overnight was 86.8% in Quarter 3 2011/12 compared with 85.1% in Quarter 2 2011/12.
• The average daily number of day only beds was 11,324 in Quarter 3 2011/12 compared with 11,468 in Quarter 2 2011/12.
From quarter 2 2011/12 onwards we have had responses from six NHS Foundation trusts which had not submitted previously, therefore caution should be made when making comparisons at national and SHA level over time.
