Statistical press notice: Critical care and delayed transfers of care statistics – September 2011 data
Monthly situation reports on critical care beds, cancelled operations and delayed transfers of care published today

The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Monthly situation reports on critical care beds, cancelled operations and delayed transfers of care for September 2011 and revised data for August 2010 to August 2011 for delayed transfers of care.

The main findings for September 2011 were:

  • There were 3,718 adult critical care beds available with 3,042 occupied in September 2011. This compares with 3,704 available and 2,953 occupied in August 2011.
  • The number of urgent operations cancelled was 310 in September 2011. This compares with 254 urgent operation cancellations in August 2011.
  • There were 4,266 patients delayed on the last Thursday of the month, with the total number of delayed days in the month at 121,795 days. This compares to a revised figure of 4,204 patients in August and 119,429 days delayed.
  • Of the 4,266 patients, 2,340 were acute patients and of the 121,795 delayed days, 65,030 were acute.
