The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP, has expressed her deep regret at the news of the death of Corporal Channing Day in Afghanistan.

Corporal Day was from Comber in County Down and was serving with 3 Medical Regiment who are currently based in Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

The Secretary of State said:

I was deeply saddened to hear the news that Corporal Day had died while serving her country in Afghanistan. My thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our soldiers serving overseas for the fine example of courage, service and duty that they set. I am confident that those who had the privilege of knowing Channing and the wider community in Comber will come together to support her family and friends at this time.
