The Information Commissioner's Office is the UK's independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.

Established as the Data Protection Registrar by the Data Protection Act 1984 and renamed Information Commissioner 2001 in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Receives grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Justice for its Freedom of Information activities. Data Protection is funded by notification fees received from individuals and organisations that process personal data.
