In a moving account, skipper Raymond Strachan shares how losing a crewmate overboard continues to shape his safety preparedness more than a decade later.

At the start of Maritime Safety Week, we highlighted the statistic that half of man overboard incidents from fishing vessels end in tragedy.

In 2009, MAIB investigated a fatal man overboard accident on board scallop dredger Maggie Ann. Despite the quick reactions of the skipper and crew, the deckhand sank below the sea surface before he could be rescued.

MAIB inspector Antony Shine met with Raymond and today we share this personal video account of what happened and what could have saved his crewmate’s life.
